PORTLAND WEEK 19 - 25 Aug 2019 - (ARTS day Mon 19 Aug)

Grand Plastic Jellyfish Sculpture Challenge

To highlight the need for a total ban of plastic waste, we are challenging you to help us make a giant jellyfish sculpture from plastic drinks bottles. These are often washed up or seen floating around our oceans, particularly on Portland beaches where various tides converge.

Portland is very proud of keeping it's Sea pollution and beach waste to a minimum but we need our local Council to do more by putting restrictions and levies on businesses that are polluting our environment daily!

Make a Dreamcatcher or Jellyfish Activities - Kids and Adults

Holly Yates, well-known on Portland for her beautiful and highly-creative textile artwork, will be inviting you to make either a Dreamcatcher or Jellyfish from recycled materials. It's really important to get the message across to all generations, but in particularly to the younger generation, about plastic pollution which is becoming an increasingly big worldwide problem.

Donation of £5 is welcomed and a percentage is made to Portland Marina's chosen charities for 2019.

Grand Chalk Drawing Pavement Challenge

We would like to create one of the largest public pavement chalk drawings (possibly in the UK) Will you help us? Sea and beach themed and why not take your child's photo once they've finished. Don't forget to sign your name on your masterpiece!

Facepainting and 'Draw & Sketch"

Children love having their face painted (and so do adults too!) Get in the festival mood at Portland Marina on Mon 19 Aug 10am - 4pm and choose a nautical themed design.

We're also offering you the chance to try out your sketching and drawing skills with Charles Maher, local artist.

Small donation of £2 will cover materials and go to Portland Marina's chosen charities for 2019.

En-Plein Air Painters

Watch how the experts paint! See theirs unfold before your eyes with our En-plein Air painters. You are invited to chat and ask questions, and even pick up the odd painting technique.

If you are really inspired, most of our artists offer workshops so why not discover your own hidden creative talents!

Pots on Portland

Stephen Yates will be 'throwing a pot' or twenty on his Potter's wheel on Mon 19 Aug 10am - 4pm. See how he expertly creates a variety of vessels and incorporates found objects, such as 'glass pebbles' found on Chesil Beach into his unique designs. Inspired by the beautiful Jurassic coastline, why not take a piece of Portland home with you!
